GUEST WE BLOG: Focus On The Opportunities That Lie Ahead

University admission has now been my career for almost eight years, but prior to jumping onto this side of this desk, I spent two years being a school that is high in my house state of Louisiana. We was never ever formally the school’s ‘college counselor,’ so I was spared from having to compose hundreds upon a huge selection of letters of recommendation. But during those two years, as a result of my role as moderator associated with the Student Council, I was in a position to get acquainted with a number of seniors who had been going right through the admission process. I am sure will leave a great number of students dissatisfied, confused, and questioning our judgment, a particular meeting with one of my favorite Student Council members is fresh on my mind as we prepare to mail out decisions regarding our scholarship decisions, which.

With regard to this tale, let’s call him Scott. Scott was the superstar of our college. He was Class President every year during senior school, he had been the pep rally emcee, and I would go well over the word limit that this blog allows if I were to continue listing all his accomplishments. To top it well, he had been just a kid that is incredibly likeable. We reached know Scott real well for so much of what our Student Council was asked to do since I relied on him. Scott had the period that is final of school day off, so as my time was winding down, he’d often come by my office to hold out.

One time, with a couple of months left in his year that is senior arrived by looking as bummed out as I had ever seen him. He shared beside me which he had been denied admission to their top choice college. To make matters worse, one of is own best friends, who he had planned to room with on campus, had been admitted. I did not really know what to Scott to help him out. In ‘counseling school,’ we discovered that sometimes, the approach that is best to giving advice to somebody who is depressed is to not say any such thing at all, so that’s what i did so.

That this rejection was probably the first time in nearly four years that Scott had been denied something as I was driving home, it dawned on me. He ended up being selected for each leadership position, each club, and each united team that he sought out during highschool. And now, he was told ‘No’ by a college. Any royal vegas casino online of us in Scott’s shoes would react the same way if after years of success we were suddenly confronted with what seemed like a failure.

After pouring through hundreds upon hundreds of applications during our scholarship review process, and having to deny so many terrific students the chance to receive a scholarship, I would bet that a lot of our applicants feel like Scott did on that time some seven years back. My amazement at how much our applicants accomplish during their high school careers is matched by my disappointment that individuals can’t make it work for all of them. It is the ugly truth of our process, and of any competitive admission process, for that matter.

But let’s go back again to Scott for a moment. Three years back, he had been visiting Los Angeles, so he and i obtained together for supper. He previously just graduated from university, where, to no shock, he had once again be a leader on the campus community, albeit at a campus that was not their first choice school whenever he had been a high school senior. And I also’ll always remember what he said when he told me personally he was hoping for: ‘I’m not worried that he hadn’t gotten into the graduate program. We’ll eventually figure it out.’ Exactly What I discovered for the reason that moment is compared to all the great things Scott learned since he left high school, the best of all ended up being the capability to cope with rejection. He don’t become an epic failure like he might have felt whenever he was denied from their dream school, and he had grown up so much in only a few short years.

So at the moment when our scholarship decisions have remaining a lot of you feeling a glum that is little I hope Scott’s tale provides some convenience. In place of harping on the loss of a scholarship, attempt to concentrate on the opportunities that still lie ahead. You may not realize it now, but there are more out there than you can possibly imagine.
